Recently The Florida Pediatrician Journal Editorial Board unanimously recommended Rani S. Gereige, MD, MPH, FAAP, to be elected as the journal’s Associate Editor. Rani is well known to many pediatricians and pediatric specialists in Florida from his leadership roles in the FCAAP as well as the AAP to his role as the Director of Medical Education at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. In his capacity as a longstanding member of the journal Editorial Board, his expertise in multiple areas, including postgraduate medical education (he is an old hat at accreditation reviews), school health, primary care sports medicine, public health initiatives (note his master’s degree in public health in maternal and child health from USF). Evidence-based medicine, pediatric oral health, pediatric sports medicine, and children with special health care needs have been invaluable to The Florida Pediatrician Journal. He is additionally an ex-pediatric chief resident and a graduate of the USF Leadership Institute, explaining his natural gravitation toward important leadership roles at local, state, and national levels.

Editorial work is not new for Rani. In addition to his many publications in peer-reviewed journals (27 at last count in PubMed), Rani is a member of the Editorial Board of Pediatrics in Review as Associate Editor for CME, and he serves as a manuscript reviewer for several other peer-reviewed journals. Rani currently holds the position of Clinical Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.

The members of The Florida Pediatrician Journal Editorial Board, its staff, and I look forward to working closely with Rani on our new journal initiatives, one of which is codifying a system of outside expert reviewers. This sounds simple enough, but it is far from being an easy task. Interestingly, the lead article in this issue of the journal concerning visual snow syndrome served as an additional catalyst for Rani and the Board’s Editor Emeritus, Dr. Mobeen Rathore, to brainstorm enhancing our review processes with established experts outside the board at our last meeting. None of us were familiar enough with this fascinating condition to serve as an expert reviewer of the manuscript. This led to the Board’s new requirement to ask manuscript authors to recommend expert reviewers (which we will vet) with their submissions and for a call for expert reviewer volunteers.
